Marlys Svendsen has undertaken historic preservation projects in Iowa City for more than 20 years. She takes a look back at municipal preservation planning projects, historical neighborhood surveys in the East Jefferson Street, Northside, Goosetown, Downtown and the Melrose Avenue neighborhoods as well as more recent work in town and on the University of Iowa campus as part of her position as a historic project specialist following the Flood of 2008. She offers insight about some of the early projects as well as an update on an effort to commemorate Sabin Elementary School in upcoming months with an important historic salvage project associated with the development of the Riverfront Crossings District in Iowa City. She also talks about the other Iowa City schools built in the pre-World War I school building boom.
